Opening a Domiciliary Account for Car Imports

Tunde O.·Last updated ·5 min

A domiciliary account can help with vehicle imports, but it is not always the fastest path. Many Nigerian dealers open one expecting instant Copart payments, then discover settlement still depends on correspondent banks and manual FX.

Here is what importers actually need from a USD account, when a dom account makes sense, and when a named US account from Raiz Auto is the simpler path.

What a domiciliary account is for

USD domiciliary accounts let you hold dollars locally and fund international wires from Nigeria. They are useful for general trade, but auction houses and US shippers often need ACH or wire from a US-routable source.

Why importers still hit delays

Even with a dom account, you may wait on Form M approvals, bank cut-off times, and FX spreads. Each layer adds days between winning a bid and getting title release.

  • Manual FX quotes that change before your wire clears
  • Beneficiary details that do not match auction invoices
  • Weekend and holiday cut-offs at Nigerian banks

When Raiz is the simpler path

Raiz gives car importers a named US account and direct settlement to Copart, IAAI, Manheim, and shippers, funded from Naira at a locked rate. No agent markup, no guessing whether your dom wire will arrive in time.
